Replacing a sofa bed hinge isn’t brain surgery, but it’s easy to do wrong if you grab the wrong model. The number-one rule: match the actual hinge, not the name. Here’s how we tell buyers to do it.

Before you start — confirm the hinge
Our 304 (large), 305 (plate), 306/307/309 (spring) are not interchangeable. Before removing anything:
- Get the original hinge, or clear photos from several angles.
- Note the overall length, material thickness, and where the mounting holes sit.
- Note whether it’s a spring type (306/307/309) or a plain hinge (304/305).
If you’re not sure which model, send us the photos plus dimensions and we’ll point you to it. Guessing by “it’s a sofa bed hinge” is how people end up with a part that almost fits.
Step by step — replacement
1. Open the sofa bed and support the moving section.
Don’t let it flop while you work. Prop it or have someone hold it.
2. Remove the old hinge.
Unscrew both halves. Keep one screw if it helps you match hole positions — but measure properly too, don’t trust the old holes alone.
3. Check the new hinge against the old.
Length, hole positions, thickness — they should line up. If the spring hinge (306/307/309) has a return direction, make sure it faces the right way.
4. Fit one half, then the other.
Mount the fixed half to the frame, the moving half to the bed section. Don’t fully tighten until both are seated.
5. Test the motion.
Fold and unfold a few times. A spring hinge should return smoothly; a plain hinge should pivot without binding. If it catches, stop — something’s misaligned.
6. Tighten and re-check.
Once the motion’s clean, tighten down. Give it one more fold to be sure.
For new production (not replacement)
You’ve got more freedom — no existing holes to match. But still confirm the hinge model and mounting orientation in the spec before bulk ordering, so sampling and production stay consistent.
Common mistakes
- Matching by name only. “Sofa bed hinge” covers 304–309. Pick by model and dimensions.
- One photo, one angle. The profile hides in the side view. Send more.
- Forcing a tight fit. If it binds, it’s the wrong model, not a clearance issue.
- Ignoring spring direction. A spring hinge put in backwards feels wrong immediately.
FAQ
Can I replace a sofa bed hinge myself?
Yes, if you match the model and dimensions. Support the bed section, remove the old hinge, fit the new one, test the motion before tightening.
How do I know which hinge model to buy?
Match the original — photos from a few angles plus length, thickness and hole positions. If unknown, send those to us and we’ll identify it.
Are spring hinges harder to fit than plain hinges?
Slightly — you have to watch the return direction. Otherwise the steps are the same.
What if my sofa uses a pull-out mechanism instead of a hinge?
Then you need a pull-out mechanism (301–303), not a hinge. The install is different (track-based), so confirm the type first.
